That silky vibrator, textured stroker or favourite plug deserves more than being shoved into a bedside drawer after a good time. Proper toy care essentials protect your body, preserve the feel and function of your toys, and make every next session feel confident rather than questionable.

A quick rinse is not always enough. Material, waterproofing, where the toy has been used and the lube you chose all affect how it should be cleaned. The good news? A simple routine handles most of the work - and it does not need to kill the mood.

Start with the material, not the shape

Before washing anything, check the packaging or product instructions for the toy's material and water rating. A waterproof silicone vibrator can handle care very differently from a battery-operated wand with an exposed charging port, a realistic TPE masturbator or leather bondage cuffs.

Non-porous materials such as platinum silicone, stainless steel, borosilicate glass and ABS plastic have smooth surfaces that do not readily hold bacteria when cleaned properly. They are usually the easiest options for regular play, sharing with a partner and long-term care.

Porous materials, including TPE, TPR, jelly rubber, PVC, cyberskin-style blends and some soft rubber finishes, need more attention. Tiny surface pores can retain residue even when a toy looks clean. Avoid radiators, hairdryers and direct sunlight. Excess heat can warp soft materials, weaken adhesives and shorten battery life. Room-temperature air drying is slower, but your toy will thank you for it.

Store each toy like it has its own personality

Storage is where many otherwise well-cared-for toys get damaged. Different soft materials can react when pressed together, and silicone items may attract dust or pick up fibres from loose fabric. A dedicated storage bag or clean, dry box keeps your collection discreet and ready for action.

Keep toys separated, particularly silicone, TPE and rubber pieces. Original packaging can work well if it is clean and completely dry, while soft drawstring bags are ideal for preventing scratches on glass, metal and polished plastic.
